xTool launches M2 modular desktop crafting machine with AI material detection
While the base unit includes a 10W laser, full-colour CMYK printing and thicker material cutting require separate bundles, and the company recommends a $999 air purifier for regular use.

xTool has released the M2, a modular desktop crafting machine designed for printing, slicing, and engraving. Priced at $599, with a temporary launch week discount of $549, the device represents the company’s most affordable laser cutting tool to date. It replaces the M1 Ultra as the entry-level model, distinguished by an enhanced camera system and artificial intelligence capabilities that streamline the user experience.
The machine features a 10W laser diode in its base configuration, capable of cutting through over 300 thinner materials. However, xTool positions the M2 as a modular platform rather than a static tool. Users seeking full-colour CMYK printing must purchase a $749 bundle that includes the inkjet printing module, which is rated for approximately 400 pages per cartridge. For those requiring the ability to cut thicker materials, a $1,149 bundle upgrades the laser to a 20W diode. Additionally, an infrared laser module suitable for engraving metals is available as a separate $499 upgrade.
A key differentiator for the M2 is its dual-camera setup, comprising a 5-megapixel panoramic lens and a 2-megapixel close-up camera. These components photograph materials placed inside the unit, allowing users to accurately position designs via the xTool Studio desktop software. The system also utilises AI to detect the type of material inserted and automatically adjust settings for cutting, engraving, or scoring, reducing the manual configuration required for novices.
The device’s footprint is larger than a typical desktop printer to accommodate its modular components and integrated air pump. Unlike more powerful industrial laser cutters that often require external filtration systems, the M2 vents exhaust directly into the room. xTool recommends the separate SafetyPro AP2 Air Purifier, priced at $999, for users engaged in regular cutting activities, noting that the purifier costs more than the base machine itself.
Market positioning for the M2 targets creators looking for an affordable entry point into product manufacturing, particularly for platforms such as Etsy. The modular design allows users to start with basic slicing and engraving capabilities and upgrade to printing or higher-power lasers as their business requirements evolve. The machine is available for purchase starting today.
