X accounts are limited to 50 posts and 200 replies a day unless they pay for a blue checkmark
Social media platform enforces stricter caps on unverified users to curb spam and drive revenue

X has implemented a sharp reduction in daily activity caps for free-tier accounts, restricting users to a maximum of 50 original posts and 200 replies per day. This represents a substantial contraction from the previous allowance of 2,400 posts, a move that Engadget reports is designed to incentivise subscriptions to the platform’s paid verification services.

The new thresholds are now reflected in the X Help Centre, which states that unverified accounts are subject to these limits. Users who reach these caps will be notified via error messages indicating which limit has been breached. The update contrasts with cached versions of the Help Centre page, which still reference the older 2,400 updates per day rule, creating a discrepancy between the enforced policy and the published documentation.

The restriction is part of a broader strategy to monetise the platform and combat spam and bot activity. This follows similar measures introduced in October, such as the "about this account" feature, which reveals the geographic origin of accounts to increase transparency. The platform has tied the "blue checkmark" verification to subscription tiers, with the Basic X Premium tier priced at $3 a month or $32 per year.

Reaction from the user base has been mixed, with reports on X and Reddit indicating dissatisfaction among longtime users. Some users have expressed concern that the stringent limits may drive traffic away from the platform, potentially leading to user churn. However, for those wishing to maintain high-volume posting capabilities, the Basic Premium tier offers a route to bypass these restrictions.

While the move is widely interpreted as a financial lever to boost Premium subscriptions, X has framed the changes within the context of platform integrity and spam reduction. The pricing for the Basic tier may vary by region or promotional offers, and it remains unclear if the limits apply uniformly across all jurisdictions or if exceptions exist for specific account histories.
