WWE adopts interim title model for women’s championship following Ripley injury
Raw general manager Adam Pearce confirms Rhea Ripley’s absence due to a torn meniscus, prompting a five-woman ladder match to determine the interim titleholder.

WWE has announced it will crown its first-ever interim women’s champion on the main roster at the upcoming SummerSlam event, marking a significant shift in the promotion’s approach to title management. The decision follows an injury update from Raw general manager Adam Pearce, who confirmed that reigning champion Rhea Ripley will not compete at the August event.
Pearce, acting as temporary SmackDown general manager amid the suspension of Nick Aldis, stated that Ripley is recovering from a torn meniscus sustained on 3 June. While noting that she has worked tirelessly with WWE medical staff, Pearce explained that the "tricky nature" of the injury means her return timetable remains uncertain. Consequently, the organisation has opted to introduce an interim title rather than vacate the championship, a strategy more commonly associated with the UFC.
A five-woman ladder match will determine the interim champion at SummerSlam, which is scheduled for 1 and 2 August in Minneapolis. The winner of this contest will unify the title with Ripley upon her return to competition. Pearce described the upcoming unification bout as the decisive contest to determine who the "one and only WWE women’s champion truly is."
Qualifying for the ladder match is underway on SmackDown over the next two weeks. Two specific qualifiers have been confirmed: Jade Cargill versus Nia Jax, and Tiffany Stratton versus Jacy Jane. The identities of the remaining two competitors in the five-woman field are yet to be determined as the qualifying process continues.
This move represents a departure from WWE’s historical precedent on the main roster, where titles have traditionally been vacated to progress storylines. While an interim title was previously introduced on the NXT developmental brand—won by Santos Escobar after Jordan Devlin faced travel restrictions—this marks the first time the model has been applied to the main roster in the promotion’s nearly three-quarters of a century of history.
SummerSlam is set to feature several other high-profile contests, including CM Punk and Cody Rhodes competing for the undisputed WWE title, Roman Reigns defending the World Heavyweight Title against Seth Rollins, and a Hell in a Cell match between Oba Femi and Brock Lesnar.
