Thursday Cannon Fodder: World Cup
FIFA tournament proceeds despite visa disputes, pricing controversies, and expanded format concerns

The FIFA World Cup is scheduled to commence in one week, marking the first tournament hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Despite the event proceeding, there is a noted lack of public excitement compared to previous editions. This subdued atmosphere is attributed to an expanded tournament format, 'football fatigue' following the Champions League final, and the lingering controversy surrounding the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Logistical and political concerns have further dampened enthusiasm. High ticket prices and a ban on refillable plastic water bottles at venues during the American summer have drawn criticism. Additionally, the political alliance between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Donald Trump has been cited as a factor influencing public perception, with critics arguing that decisions often prioritise commercial interests over other considerations.

A significant administrative hurdle remains for the Iranian national team, which currently lacks visas to enter the United States for their scheduled June 15 match. The unresolved status of the team’s entry presents a diplomatic and operational challenge as the tournament prepares to begin, adding to the list of controversies surrounding the event.

FIFA has confirmed that Madonna, Shakira, and BTS will headline a Super Bowl-style half-time show at the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19. Curated by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, the performance marks the first half-time show in a football World Cup final and aims to support the Global Citizen Education Fund.

The expanded format has reduced group-stage uncertainty, with most top teams expected to progress to the knockouts. While this has been described by some as a misguided change that diminishes early jeopardy, it has also allowed countries making their first appearance or returning after decades to experience the tournament. The event will proceed despite these structural and political debates.
