Wolfsburg relegated from Bundesliga after playoff defeat in Paderborn
Volkswagen-backed club falls to Paderborn on aggregate, ending first stint in top flight since 1997

Wolfsburg has been relegated from the Bundesliga following a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Paderborn in the end-of-season promotion and relegation playoff. The result confirms the Volkswagen-backed club’s exit from Germany’s top flight for the first time since their promotion in 1997, ending a campaign that saw them finish third from the bottom of the table.

The decisive second leg was played in Paderborn, where the visiting side secured their return to the top division with a 2-1 victory. This result overturned the 0-0 draw from the first leg in Wolfsburg, giving Paderborn, who finished third in the 2. Bundesliga, the aggregate edge required for promotion.

The match turned on a pivotal moment early in the second leg, when Wolfsburg was reduced to ten players. The club played with ten men for all but the first 13 minutes of the contest, a significant handicap that Paderborn exploited. Laurin Curda scored the promotion-clinching goal in the 10th minute of extra time, sealing the outcome after Wolfsburg had failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage in the opening stages.

The relegation marks a stark contrast to the club’s history, which includes a Bundesliga championship title in 2009. Wolfsburg had previously survived similar threats, successfully defending their top-flight status in playoff deciders against Eintracht Braunschweig in 2017 and Holstein Kiel in 2018. However, their recent form necessitated this final showdown for survival, which they ultimately lost.

The result also signals the end of a disappointing season for Danish international Christian Eriksen. The star player, who joined Wolfsburg on a two-year deal in September, captained the side in Paderborn. His tenure with the club concludes with relegation, a bitter outcome for a squad that had hoped to build on his arrival.
