WNBA Postpones Liberty-Wings Match Following Charter Flight Mechanical Failure
Severe weather and mechanical issues force rescheduling of Thursday’s contest to Monday, July 20, marking the first postponement since 2023.
The Women’s National Basketball Association has postponed the scheduled fixture between the New York Liberty and the Dallas Wings due to mechanical complications involving the Liberty’s charter aircraft. The decision was made less than 10 hours before the scheduled tip-off, marking the first game postponement or cancellation in the league since 2023. The match has been rescheduled for Monday, 20 July, at 8 p.m. ET.
The Liberty squad was detained on the tarmac for more than 10 hours on Wednesday night. Rookie Pauline Astier confirmed the duration of the delay via an Instagram story at 10:25 p.m. ET, stating the team had been waiting on the ground for 10 hours. While the league cited mechanical issues as the primary cause for the postponement, severe thunderstorms in the New York area contributed to broader flight disruptions on Wednesday.
Compounding the logistical challenges, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport experienced significant weather-related impacts, recording over 900 storm-related delays and enforcing a one-hour ground stoppage mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration. These conditions created a complex travel environment for both franchises ahead of the rescheduled fixture.
This incident occurs within the WNBA’s first full season of operating full-time charter flights, a policy implemented in 2024 to replace commercial travel and improve player accommodations. Prior to this transition, travel logistics were a frequent source of operational difficulty; in 2018, the Las Vegas Aces forfeited a game against the Washington Mystics after a transit period exceeding 25 hours.
The schedule adjustment necessitates a back-to-back arrangement for the Dallas Wings at College Park Center. The team, currently fourth in the standings with a 16-8 record and a five-game winning streak, will host the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET before facing the Liberty on Monday. The New York Liberty, sitting eighth with a 13-11 record, will travel to Indianapolis to play the Indiana Fever on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.
