Carrington was ejected from the match in the opening quarter after making contact with Cunningham’s head and neck area during a layup attempt. The foul was upgraded following a review, triggering an automatic ejection under league rules.
Shortly after leaving the court, Carrington posted the phrase “white privilege” on the social media platform Threads, tagging the Indiana Fever. The post has prompted immediate responses from league participants and officials. Cunningham stated that the incident was unrelated to race, noting she had been ejected previously for similar actions and suggesting the online comment was an attempt to generate attention due to the national television profile of the game.
Sky coach Tyler Marsh confirmed that the club would address the social media post, stating he was unaware of it until after the match and that the organisation would handle the matter. Cunningham described the foul as unnecessary but indicated she had no personal grievance with Carrington, suggesting the guard had “pent-up stuff” that needed to be released.
Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White, who previously coached Carrington, defended her competitive nature while acknowledging the severity of the contact. White stated she did not believe Carrington intentionally targeted Cunningham’s neck, though she accepted the referee’s call.
