Wireless gaming mice close the latency gap with wired rivals
Engadget says 2.4GHz wireless models now offer broadly comparable responsiveness, though buyers still face higher prices and the need to recharge.

The performance gap between wired and wireless gaming mice has narrowed significantly as wireless technology has improved, according to Engadget. For gamers choosing new hardware, the decision now hinges less on latency alone and more on cost, battery life and personal preference.
Engadget cites latency of 0.5 to 1 milliseconds for many wireless gaming mice, compared with 0.3 to 1 milliseconds for wired models. It says the difference is negligible even for highly competitive players, while DPI and tracking speed are generally comparable between wired and wireless mice in the same tier.
Connection type remains important. Wireless mice using 2.4GHz dongles generally offer faster polling and lower latency than Bluetooth. Polling rate measures how frequently a mouse communicates with a computer, with high-end gaming models capable of reaching 8,000Hz.
Player preferences have also shifted. Engadget cites a 2025 ProSettings survey of 2,420 e-sports players in which all ten top mouse picks were wireless. The result reflects player choice rather than proving that wireless devices perform better in every setting.
The main trade-offs are price and charging. Wireless models typically cost more because of their additional connectivity and charging hardware, and although some batteries can last more than 100 hours, they still require periodic charging. Weight, ergonomics and the number of buttons remain central to the choice, depending on the games being played.
