WIRED’s 2026 Power Bank Guide: Top Picks After Testing 100 Units
The publication’s updated May 2026 review highlights five standout portable chargers, including high-wattage options from Anker and Sharge, while noting stricter airline regulations and safety advice on pass-through charging.

WIRED has released its 2026 guide to the best portable chargers, evaluating more than 100 units to identify five top picks. The update, published in May 2026, incorporates new models such as a power bank from BMX, revised pricing, and a new FAQ section addressing charging speeds. The selection reflects evolving consumer needs and stricter airline regulations introduced in 2025, which limit power bank usage during flights and require some units to be kept under seats.
The guide’s primary recommendation is the Anker Laptop Power Bank, which features a 25,000 mAh capacity and can deliver up to 165 watts to two devices. It includes a retractable flat USB-C cable and a braided cable that doubles as a carry loop. The unit displays battery health, temperature, and charging rates, and supports pass-through charging, allowing users to recharge the bank while powering another device. WIRED notes that Anker has discontinued pass-through support in some other products due to safety concerns regarding rapid cycling and shortened battery life.
For users prioritising portability, the Nimble Champ Pro is highlighted for its eco-friendly construction. Weighing 6.2 ounces, the device uses 90 per cent recycled plastic, a 25 per cent increase from the original model, and comes in plastic-free minimal packaging. The Pro version offers a 20,000 mAh capacity with dual USB-C ports supporting up to 65 watts. WIRED also notes that the company donates tested power banks to local charity after evaluation is complete.
The Sharge 170 appeals to consumers seeking a distinct aesthetic, featuring a transparent design and a maximum output of 170 watts. With a 24,000 mAh capacity and an IP66 rating for water resistance, it can recharge completely in an hour via USB-C at up to 140 watts. The triangular design ensures the smart display remains angled for easy viewing, showing battery life as a percentage and time remaining.
Wireless charging options are represented by the Anker MagGo Qi2, the first Qi2 power bank tested by WIRED. It supports Apple’s StandBy mode and delivers up to 15 watts of wireless charging, while also featuring a two-way USB-C port. Additionally, the guide includes an Anker Apple Watch charger with a pop-up 5-watt connector that supports Nightstand mode. WIRED advises consumers to verify airline rules before travel, as some carriers now restrict power banks to carry-on luggage under the seat.
