As the 2026 laptop market matures, WIRED’s latest comprehensive buying guide identifies a critical inflection point: 16GB of RAM is now the baseline requirement, while a looming memory shortage threatens to inflate costs for consumers.
WIRED has released an updated consumer guide for purchasing laptops in 2026, emphasising that buyers should prioritise portability, battery life, and specific use cases over generic specifications. The publication highlights a significant shift in hardware standards driven by on-device artificial intelligence requirements, recommending 16GB of RAM as the new minimum and 512GB of storage as the standard. The guide also notes a looming memory shortage that is expected to drive up prices.
Technologically, the landscape features Apple’s M5 family, Intel’s Panther Lake chips on the 18A node, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 series with 80 TOPS NPU performance, and AMD’s Zen 6 architecture. Operating system developments include the launch of macOS 26 Tahoe last year and Google’s 2026 merger of Chromebooks and tablets into a new platform called Googlebooks.
The guide advises that 16GB of RAM is now essential to support background AI models in Windows 11 and macOS, marking a departure from the 8GB standard of previous years.
