WIRED’s 2026 Fan Guide Reveals Rise of Radar Tracking and Cryo-Cooling
From millimetre-wave motion tracking to integrated misting systems, the latest household cooling devices are moving beyond simple air circulation.
WIRED has published its updated 2026 consumer guide, "The 13 Best Fans to Buy Before It Gets Hot Again," recommending 13 distinct household fan models across multiple categories. The review highlights a significant shift in home cooling technology, emphasising features such as radar-based airflow tracking, integrated misting systems, and cryo-cooling plates. The guide spans pedestal, tower, bladeless, and fitness fan categories, with specific endorsements for products from brands including Dreo, Vornado, Shark, and Dyson.
The publication notes that modern fans have evolved beyond basic air movement, incorporating smart capabilities and precision engineering. A standout feature in the 2026 lineup is the use of millimetre-wave sensors to track user movement. The Dreo TurboPoly 707S utilises radar to redirect airflow as a person moves within a room, adjusting strength based on distance. This technology aims to provide targeted cooling in dynamic environments, such as kitchens or open-plan living areas, where users may not remain stationary.
In the tower fan segment, WIRED’s testing identified several models that challenge traditional performance metrics. The Dreo MC706 was noted for its ability to rival utility fans through auto-shift positive temperature coefficient technology, which allows for full airflow even when the heater element is active. Meanwhile, the Dreo 765S introduced patented ultrafine misting technology, producing particles small enough to lower perceived temperature without wetting surfaces, a feature deemed suitable for indoor use.
Fitness and portable cooling solutions also received detailed scrutiny. The Fly Max fitness fan was highlighted for its ability to simulate air resistance during indoor workouts, featuring a magnetic remote designed for attachment to exercise equipment. In the handheld category, the Shark ChillPill 3-in-1 system was reviewed for its cryo-inspired cold plate, which can be pressed against the skin for immediate cooling, alongside a standard fan and misting attachment.
The guide also addressed value and reliability across price points. While premium models from Dyson and Vornado were praised for build quality and aesthetic design, WIRED noted that several mid-range options from Dreo and Lasko offer comparable performance for lower costs. The publication emphasised that while fans do not lower ambient room temperature, their ability to circulate air and enhance evaporative cooling remains a critical factor in managing indoor heat during warmer months.
