Best Water Leak Detectors (2026): Moen, Phyn, TP-Link
A new review from WIRED evaluates smart home safety devices, highlighting automatic shut-off capabilities and emerging connectivity standards like Matter.

Water plays an essential role in our homes, but it can also wreak havoc. Burst pipes, leaky toilets, and misbehaving appliances can dampen your day. Water leak detectors help reduce the risk by alerting you to problems quickly so you can act to prevent severe damage. Around one in 60 insured homeowners file a claim related to water damage or freezing every year, according to the Insurance Information Institute, and the average cost of the property damage is about $15,000. The longer a leak goes undetected, the more damage it does, destroying furniture and decorations, spawning mould and fungi, and even threatening structural integrity.

WIRED has published a comprehensive guide reviewing top water leak detectors for 2026, featuring models from Moen, Phyn, TP-Link, Shelly, and others. The article highlights devices that offer automatic shut-off capabilities, smart home integration via Matter, Alexa, or HomeKit, and various connectivity options including Wi-Fi and LoRa. Reviews detail performance in detecting leaks, alert reliability, app functionality, and pricing, recommending specific units for different home setups and budgets. The guide was updated in May 2026 to include a new entry from Shelly, reorganised picks, and updated pricing.

The Moen Flo Smart Water Monitor is identified as a top-tier option that installs directly onto the home's water supply line, featuring an automatic shut-off mechanism that activates if a leak is detected and the user does not manually stop the flow within a few minutes. Installation requires a licensed plumber or DIY plumbing skills and takes approximately 30 minutes. The device takes around two weeks to learn the home's daily water usage patterns, after which it sends instant notifications for leaks or high usage. If the user does not act on the notification within a few minutes, the system will automatically shut off the home's water.

For those prioritising smart home compatibility, the Shelly Flood Gen 4 is highlighted as a strong contender due to its support for the Matter smart home standard, alongside Zigbee, Bluetooth, and dual-band Wi-Fi. The guide notes that while initial testing showed some issues with Google Home app alerts, these appear to have been resolved, allowing the detector to correctly sound an alarm and send alerts through the Home app. The unit is IP44-rated and requires four AA batteries, with an extendable cable to trail around the area being monitored.

Connectivity limitations exist for some sensors; for example, YoLink relies on a LoRa network rather than direct Wi-Fi, which may require a specific gateway setup. YoLink sensors are noted for using the LoRa network, offering long-range connectivity up to a quarter of a mile without requiring a direct Wi-Fi signal for the sensors themselves. This makes them suitable for larger properties or areas with poor Wi-Fi coverage, though the sensors themselves do not produce sound and rely on a separate hub or speaker for audible alerts.

The guide also flags that the Ikea Badring Zigbee detector is discontinued, with the new Matter-supporting Ikea Klippbok recommended as a successor. Testing methodology involved a rigorous process including dripping water, pooling water, flooding, battery removal simulations, and testing alerts over both Wi-Fi and cellular networks. The publication advises that for the best protection, consumers should combine spot-check detectors with flow monitoring systems to detect when a pipe bursts or a leak develops in any part of the plumbing system.
