Best Air Purifiers (2026): Coway, AirDoctor, IQAir, and More
Review spans Coway, IQAir, and Dyson models, emphasizing long-term value and CARB certification

WIRED has published its updated 2026 guide to the best air purifiers, released on 13 May 2026. The review covers a broad spectrum of home appliances, ranging from budget-friendly options like the Coway Airmega Mighty at $230 to premium models such as the IQAir Atem X at $1,400. The guide evaluates brands including Coway, AirDoctor, IQAir, Blueair, Dyson, and Rabbit Air, focusing on filtration efficiency, noise levels, and smart connectivity.

The publication’s testing methodology involves a minimum four-week evaluation period conducted in a 130-plus-year-old Brooklyn apartment or a cabin in Maine. Testers utilise a gas stove and live with two cats and a dog to simulate real-world particulate and odour challenges. Noise levels are measured using consumer decibel meters, while air exchange rates are calculated based on the US Centers for Disease Control’s recommendation of five exchanges per hour.

Key features evaluated in the guide include HEPA filtration for particulate matter and activated carbon for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). WIRED places significant emphasis on CARB certification from the California Air Resources Board, noting that this standard ensures electronic and ozone safety. The review also highlights emerging technologies, such as negative oxygen ion generation in the Burtran Nano-Oxy and electrostatic filtration in the Dyson HushJet.

Several new models were added to the guide in March 2026, including the Alen BreatheSmart, Blueair Classic Pro, Sharp FPF30UH, Brondell Horizon, and Blueair PetAir Pro. Some previously tested units were moved to honourable mentions or removed due to discontinuation. The guide notes that air purifiers are increasingly viewed as long-term investments, with some models offering warranties of up to 10 years or more.

The review underscores the trade-offs between price, performance, and longevity. While lower-priced units like the Sharp FPF30UH at $129 offer basic functionality, higher-end models such as the Alen BreatheSmart 75i provide advanced app integration and quieter operation. WIRED advises consumers to consider filter replacement costs and air exchange rates when selecting a unit, noting that larger rooms require more powerful machines to maintain effective air quality.
