The report highlights a 37 per cent price reduction on the 2024 Microsoft Surface Laptop, bringing the unit down to $835. This pricing places the device below the entry-level configuration of Apple’s MacBook Air, offering a Windows alternative with a Snapdragon X chip, a 3:2 aspect ratio display, and 256 GB of storage.
The 2026 MacBook Air, equipped with the M5 chip, is listed at $950, representing a $150 discount from its retail price. While the external chassis remains unchanged from the 2022 model, the internal upgrades include enhanced graphics performance and support for up to two external monitors. WIRED notes that despite rising laptop prices in 2026, the MacBook Air has maintained competitive pricing relative to its competitors.
In the budget segment, the HP OmniBook 3 is available for under $550, featuring 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. The report acknowledges that while the 16-inch display resolution and touchpad quality are lower than premium competitors, the specifications represent a significant value proposition for the price point. The HP OmniBook 5 is also featured, offering an OLED display and a form factor comparable to the MacBook Air, though it shares similar criticisms regarding its touchpad.
Other notable inclusions in the WIRED roundup include the Asus Chromebook CX15, priced under $300 and positioned as a viable option for students or secondary use.
