WIRED Review: Jackery and Bluetti Lead Portable Solar Panel Testing
Jackery’s Solar Saga 200 tops efficiency charts, while Bluetti and BougeRV offer high-wattage and flexible alternatives, though compatibility and setup complexity remain key consumer hurdles.

WIRED has published a comprehensive review of portable solar panels, drawing on years of testing to evaluate models from major brands including Jackery, Bluetti, BougeRV, Anker, and DJI. The guide highlights that while rated capacities are often aspirational, real-world output typically achieves 70 to 80 per cent of stated wattage depending on weather and angle. Key recommendations include prioritising connector compatibility between MC4 and proprietary ports, and verifying open circuit voltage to ensure integration with existing solar generators.
Jackery’s Solar Saga 200 was noted for consistent performance, delivering around 140 watts and up to 170 watts in full sun. The latest version of the panel is bifacial with up to 26.7 per cent conversion efficiency and carries an IP68 rating for weather resistance. However, the review notes that Jackery insists on a proprietary DC8020 barrel connector, which may limit compatibility with third-party solar generators that rely on standard MC4 connectors.
Bluetti offers high-wattage options, including 350-W and 500-W panels, which achieved around 490 watts in ideal conditions. While the 500-W model features a 25 per cent conversion efficiency, it was described as difficult to set up due to its complex folding mechanism involving twelve separate sections. The review warns that the large surface area can catch wind, requiring careful positioning to prevent the panel from flipping over.
For vehicle mounting, BougeRV’s flexible panel is recommended. Weighing under 9 pounds and achieving 165 watts, the panel boasts an IP68 rating and 25 per cent conversion efficiency. Unlike rigid briefcase-style panels, this flexible option is designed to be attached to RV roofs or hardtop tents using adhesive or bolts, offering a durable solution for permanent or semi-permanent installations.
Other brands faced mixed results in the testing. Anker’s Solix PS200 produced less power than the Jackery Solar Saga 200 despite a higher price, though it includes standard MC4 connectors. DJI’s IBC Power 200W produced up to 160 watts but requires a specific adapter module for use with some DJI power stations. The review emphasises that consumers should check open circuit voltage to ensure compatibility with their solar generator, as exceeding the generator’s voltage range can be dangerous.
