Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack Del Día Dark: Sustainable and Chic
Sustainable design meets functional durability in the latest iteration of the popular travel bag

WIRED reviewer Boutayna Chokrane has published a comprehensive assessment of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack in the Del Día Dark colourway, marking the first review of the Allpa line by the publication in eight years. The updated pack is constructed from 100 per cent leftover black fabric, ensuring that each unit is unique, with interior panels composed of assorted colourful scraps including aquamarine, purple, red, and yellow. The exterior features bright zipper pulls and accents to contrast with the dark base material.

The new model introduces several functional upgrades designed to improve the user experience. These include improved weight distribution via air-mesh shoulder and hip straps, an exterior stretchy water-bottle pocket capable of holding up to 32 ounces, and a luggage pass-through strap for attachment to roller cases. The bag also features a suitcase-style full-zip opening that lays the pack flat, YKK zippers with a padlock loop, and a zipped, padded, fleece-lined laptop sleeve.

Cotopaxi, a certified Benefit Corporation (B Corp), positions the bag within its broader ethical manufacturing framework. The company donates one per cent of its annual revenue to a foundation that awards grants to nonprofits. The Del Día Dark variant specifically utilises fabric scraps that would otherwise end up in landfills, turning material constraints into a key design feature where no two bags are identical.

Chokrane tested the bag over a two-week period across four countries, evaluating its performance in real-world travel scenarios. The pack weighs 2 pounds 7 ounces and is priced at $230. During the test, the reviewer noted the bag’s spaciousness and organisational compartments, finding it sufficient to replace a secondary bag for carrying a MacBook, chargers, and personal items. The adjustable straps and waist belt can tuck away to convert the pack into a soft suitcase, aiding compliance with airline carry-on sizing restrictions.

The review highlights Cotopaxi’s lifetime repair or replacement guarantee as a significant value proposition for frequent travellers. Despite the higher upfront cost compared to standard luggage, the combination of durable construction, sustainable materials, and comprehensive warranty positions the Allpa 35L as a long-term investment. The bag is designed to withstand extensive use across airports, trains, and buses, with the company promising repairs regardless of the bag’s age.
