Winther claims second DP World Tour title at Danish Golf Championship
A dramatic finish at the Nexo Championship sees Jeff Winther secure victory by two shots, marking his return to the winner’s circle after a four-year hiatus.
Jeff Winther has secured his second DP World Tour title at the Danish Golf Championship, finishing two shots clear of a challenging field that included compatriot Rasmus Højgaard and China’s Yanhan Zhou. The 38-year-old Dane completed the event at 12 under par, ending a four-year wait for a victory on the tour.
Winther’s triumph was decided in the final stages of the tournament, with a tense conclusion on the 18th hole. Højgaard, who had been two shots behind heading into the 17th, chipped in for an eagle from a bunker to briefly take the lead. However, Winther responded with an eagle on the 16th hole, a 304-yard par four, to regain control of the tournament.
The Dane maintained his composure to make par on the 17th and 18th holes, closing with a five-under-par 67. This performance established a two-shot clubhouse lead over Zhou, who required a hole-in-one on the par-three 18th to force a play-off. Zhou instead three-putted for a bogey, confirming Winther’s victory.
Zhou finished tied for second at 12 under par, sharing the position with Højgaard, England’s Matthew Jordan, Finland’s Oliver Lindell, and Italy’s Filippo Celli. The result makes Winther only the second player to win the Danish Golf Championship, an event also broadcast as the Nexo Championship.
Winther, who previously worked as a greenskeeper 15 years ago, described the victory as “impossible to rank” aside from the birth of his children. He expressed shock at the outcome, noting the overwhelming support from the crowd throughout the week.
