Winnacunnet opened its season with a 27–6 win over Portsmouth/Oyster River in Hampton, New Hampshire, after its defence turned an early scoring chance into the first indication of the game’s direction.
Portsmouth/Oyster River reached the Winnacunnet 18-yard line on its opening possession but missed a 30-yard field goal. The Clippers were unable to convert the opportunity after a false-start penalty and pressure on quarterback Reece Green.
The defence, which returned eight starters from Winnacunnet’s previous playoff team, limited Portsmouth/Oyster River to 206 total yards and one touchdown. Demitrius Tsakiris provided the visitors’ only score with a 22-yard run in the third quarter, tying the game at 6–6.
Winnacunnet moved ahead 13–6 when Ryder Thurlow scored his first of two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Portsmouth/Oyster River then failed to record a first down on each of its next five possessions.
The Clippers’ only substantial gain after the go-ahead score came on the final play, when Green connected with Sam Biddle for 37 yards as time expired. The result gave Winnacunnet an early defensive statement in the season opener, fulfilling the potential coach Ryan Francoeur had identified during the preseason.
