Young squad led by Brynlee Roach and the Troxell twins secures postseason berth

Wilson Memorial’s girls tennis team has secured a place in the regional quarterfinals following a decisive 5-1 victory over Brookville in the Region 3C first round. The match, played indoors at Augusta Health on Monday, May 25, due to inclement weather, was driven by strong performances from Brynlee Roach and the Troxell twins, Sydney and Alison.

The Hornets advanced to the quarterfinals, where they are scheduled to face No. 4 Rocktown on May 28. The team’s success was anchored by undefeated singles players Roach and Alison Troxell, who have not lost in singles or doubles this season. Both players have also remained unbeaten in Shenandoah District play for the past two years.

Sydney Troxell, playing No. 4 singles, secured a crucial win against Brookville’s Faith Gardner. After dropping the second set, Troxell won a tiebreaker in the final set. Her sister, Alison Troxell, dominated at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Roach, at No. 1 singles, also secured a straight-sets win, 6-0, 6-1, while Amber Brunk and Elyanah Marshall won their respective matches at No. 5 and No. 6.

Roach and Alison Troxell had already won their first doubles set 6-0 before the match concluded, though they did not need to complete the second set after Sydney Troxell wrapped up the singles victory. Coach Scott Steele noted the team’s youth and lack of experience, with Sydney Troxell being the only senior in the starting lineup besides her sister. Steele highlighted that the team has suffered only narrow losses this season, with three of their six defeats coming by a 5-4 margin.

The Hornets (11-6) will now focus on the regional singles and doubles matches scheduled for May 26-27 at either Boar’s Head Resort in Charlottesville or Western Albemarle High School in Crozet, depending on weather conditions. While Roach returns next season, she will need a new doubles partner as Alison Troxell heads to college.
