WhatsApp Adds Meta AI Chats That Are Built to Be Fully Private
New feature utilises Trusted Execution Environment to shield user conversations from Meta, marking a significant shift in how the tech giant handles AI privacy.

WhatsApp has introduced 'Incognito Chat', a new capability allowing users to interact with Meta AI without the parent company accessing the content of the conversations. Built upon the existing Private Processing scheme, the feature employs a Trusted Execution Environment to ensure end-to-end encryption, meaning only the user can read the messages. The chats are ephemeral by default and disappear once the user exits the session, a design choice that distinguishes it from other disappearing AI products where logs may persist on servers for extended periods.

The text-only function is currently available on both WhatsApp and the Meta AI app, with support for image processing and voice recognition planned for future development. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that the feature handles all AI inference in a secure cloud environment, ensuring messages remain inaccessible to Meta. The company has invited third-party audits and expert oversight to verify the security of the Private Processing code, aiming to provide durable security properties for users seeking privacy-preserving AI interactions.

WhatsApp head Will Cathcart indicated that the platform may develop an option to retain conversation history in the future for users who desire it, though this is not currently available. The feature includes an optional, anonymised web search capability for up-to-date information, which is enabled by default but can be disabled. Cathcart noted that reducing latency through optimised routing was critical to making the feature usable given the computational demands of running AI within a secure environment.

A companion feature, 'Side Chat with Meta AI', allows users to query the AI about ongoing group or individual chats without sharing the full conversation history with the AI provider. This enables users to seek summaries or suggestions, such as restaurant recommendations, based on a chat without uploading sensitive context to the AI. The design aims to prevent the leakage of personal interests or locations to external companies while still leveraging AI assistance.

Despite these privacy advancements, Meta faces scrutiny regarding its broader encryption policies. This week, the company eliminated opt-in end-to-end encryption from Instagram Direct Messages, a move that contrasts with its previous promises to roll out default encryption on the platform. While Meta describes Incognito Chat as a significant step in private AI, experts note that any cloud-based solution involves trade-offs and remains a high-value target for attackers.
