Whaley and Poulter named in Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup squad

Great Britain and Ireland captain Dean Robertson has announced a 10-man squad for the 2026 Walker Cup, confirming the selection of US Amateur champion Jack Whaley and Luke Poulter, son of professional golfer Ian Poulter. The team will face the United States in the 51st edition of the biennial amateur team competition, scheduled for September 5-6 at Lahinch Golf Club in County Clare, Ireland.

Whaley, a 22-year-old Englishman, becomes the third English player to win the US Amateur, following Harold Hilton in 1911 and Matt Fitzpatrick in 2013. His victory over American Jay Leng Jr in a 36-hole final was the decisive factor in his inclusion. Robertson acknowledged that Whaley’s recent triumph altered his initial assessment of the squad.

"Before last week, I wouldn't have seen Jack in the team," Robertson said. "But after watching him, the talent he's got and the humility that he's got - the way that he spoke - I'm really excited to welcome him." The captain noted that Whaley’s selection displaces first reserve Thomas Higgins, who would otherwise have been in the squad.

The squad comprises a mix of experience and debutants. Alongside Whaley and Poulter, returning players from the 2025 event at Cypress Point include Stuart Grehan, Connor Graham, Eliot Baker, Niall Sheils Donegan, and Tyler Weaver. Ben Bolton, Sam Easterbrook, and Josh Hill join Whaley as first-time Walker Cup participants. Irish golfers Thomas Higgins and David Howard have been named as first and second reserves, respectively.

Great Britain and Ireland are seeking their first victory over the USA since their 16½-9½ triumph at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2015. The United States currently leads the overall series 40-9-1. The event will be broadcast live by Sky Sports, with coverage of the opening day commencing at 8.30am on Saturday, September 5.
