Pitcher sets single-game strikeout record as voting for regional award continues

Liam Barr of Weymouth High School has been voted South Shore High School Male Athlete of the Week, securing the honour with more than 6,500 votes. The right-handed pitcher established a new single-game program record for seven innings, recording 17 strikeouts during a 2-0 victory over Norwell in the regular-season finale.

The achievement marks a significant milestone for the Wildcats, surpassing the previous benchmark set by Chris McDonough in 2003, who recorded 20 strikeouts against Newton North in a nine-inning contest. Barr’s performance was instrumental in securing the shutout win, highlighting his dominance on the mound during the final game of the regular season.

Beyond Barr, the recognition highlights a broader spectrum of local athletic success across baseball, lacrosse, and track and field. Several other athletes were noted for their recent contributions, including Barren, who hit a deciding two-run double in a 5-4 upset win over No. 3 Springfield Central. This victory marked the Raiders’ first tournament win since 2023, with Barren also contributing an RBI double in a subsequent 3-0 win over Bridgewater-Raynham.

In other baseball feats, Dunn hit a walk-off grand slam to defeat No. 29 Marblehead 6-3 in the Division 2 Round of 32, while also recording two hits in three at-bats. Cronin and Cole Miller each scored five goals to lead the Lakers to a 16-12 win over Plymouth North in the Division 2 Round of 32. Meanwhile, Bushley pitched five scoreless innings with only two hits surrendered in an 8-2 victory over Methuen in the Division 1 Round of 32.

Lacrosse and track and field performances were also central to the week’s highlights. Falk recorded a hat trick in a 7-2 victory over Nashoba Regional in the Division 3 Round of 32, securing the Titans’ second-ever playoff win. On the track, Leonard won the Division 4 state title in the 110-meter hurdles and ran on a second-place relay team at Bridgewater State University. McNeil and Stephens Roye also claimed Division 4 and Division 3 state titles respectively in sprint and hurdle events at their respective universities.

Voting for the award remains open until Monday, June 8 at noon, with unlimited votes permitted. The recognition serves as a platform to highlight local high school athletes in the region, with the publication noting that making the list is an achievement in itself. Emailed votes will not be counted as the deadline approaches.
