Westlake recruit Dezeurn commits to Cal, reversing prior pledge to Oklahoma
Demare Dezeurn, a Westlake High School athlete, has committed to the University of California, Berkeley, after an official visit that began with a verbal pledge to the University of Oklahoma.

Demare Dezeurn, a four-star wide receiver from Westlake High School in California, has committed to the University of California, Berkeley. The announcement marks a significant shift in the recruiting landscape for the institution, as Dezeurn reversed a previous verbal pledge to the University of Oklahoma. The decision follows an official visit to Berkeley over the weekend, during which the recruit evaluated the programme’s infrastructure and leadership.
Dezeurn identified the coaching staff as a primary influence in his choice. He specifically highlighted head coach Tosh Lupoi, along with receivers coaches Ike Hilliard and Geoff McArthur. Hilliard, a former National Football League player, and McArthur, a Cal alum and former All-American, were cited for their technical expertise and established relationships with the recruit. Dezeurn noted that the prospect of being coached by individuals with such professional and institutional pedigrees was a decisive factor.
The recruit emphasised the offensive scheme as another critical component of his decision. According to Dezeurn, the coaching staff intends to utilise his speed to create explosive plays and stretch the field. The plan involves moving him around the formation to develop his receiver skills and route running, while also potentially utilising his abilities as a kick returner. He described the scheme as offering significant early opportunity for a player of his profile.
Academic considerations also played a substantial role in the final decision. Dezeurn described the University of California as offering the best of both worlds, citing strong academic opportunities alongside a football programme designed to help athletes reach the next level. While he noted that location was not a primary factor, he acknowledged it as an added benefit, stating that the campus environment felt familiar and welcoming.
The commitment places Dezeurn in the inaugural recruiting class under the current leadership structure. He expressed enthusiasm about being part of the first group to build the programme under the new regime. The announcement, which broke on Saturday with reports of his backing off the Oklahoma pledge, was finalised the following day, confirming his intention to play college football in Berkeley.
