West Ham fall with highest relegation points tally since 2011
Hammers confirm drop to second tier on final day of Premier League season

West Ham United have been relegated from the Premier League to the Championship following the conclusion of the season. The club’s status was confirmed on the final day of the campaign, ending their top-flight tenure under manager Nuno Espírito Santo. The Hammers finished with a total of 39 points.

This points tally places West Ham among the least fortunate sides to be relegated in the 38-game Premier League era. Their total matches the relegation points of Birmingham City and Blackpool during the 2010/11 campaign. Only three other teams have been relegated with more points in the 38-game era: West Ham in 2002/03 with 42 points, Bolton Wanderers in 1997/98 with 40 points, and Sunderland in 1996/97, also with 40 points.

The club’s previous relegation in 2002/03 remains one of the most infamous in Premier League history. That squad featured players such as Joe Cole, Jermain Defoe, Paolo Di Canio, and Michael Carrick, yet the team still went down with a record 42 points for a relegated side in the 38-game format.

The overall English top-flight record for the highest points total while relegated belongs to Crystal Palace. The Eagles were relegated in the 1992/93 season, which comprised 42 matches, finishing with 49 points. They lost out on survival only on goal difference.

Yahoo Sports reported the details of the relegation, noting that the current drop will go down as one of the harshest in the competition's history. The confirmation on the final day marks a significant shift for the club, which now faces the Championship under the management of Nuno Espírito Santo.
