Warnock: Olise eclipses Mbappé as France edge Spain in World Cup semi-final preview

Former England international Stephen Warnock has identified Michael Olise as the potential player of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, arguing that the Bayern Munich winger’s influence surpasses that of Kylian Mbappé. Speaking exclusively to Get French Football News (GFFN) on behalf of BetTOM, Warnock, who is serving as a BBC co-commentator at the tournament, suggested that Olise’s recent development makes him a more compelling Ballon d’Or contender than the Paris Saint-Germain forward, regardless of Mbappé’s goal tally in the final.
Warnock described France as favourites to win the tournament ahead of their semi-final against Spain, citing the squad’s attacking depth and tactical discipline under manager Didier Deschamps. He noted that while Spain holds a psychological upper hand due to their recent record against France and has conceded only one goal in the competition, France’s balanced squad offers a distinct advantage. Warnock highlighted that Deschamps appears to have allowed his players greater freedom in this final tournament, without compromising their defensive work rate.
A significant portion of Warnock’s analysis focused on Olise’s evolution since transferring from Crystal Palace to Bayern Munich. He attributed the winger’s elevated performance to a combination of a new environment, belief from coach Vincent Kompany, and individual mindset work. Warnock remarked that few observers would have predicted Olise’s current status as a Ballon d’Or contender or World Cup winner during his time at Palace, noting that the player has now become a consistent difference-maker capable of altering games with a single pass or dribble.
Despite his praise for the French attack, Warnock identified specific defensive vulnerabilities that Spain could exploit. He pointed to Lucas Digne’s susceptibility against fast wingers and Dayot Upamecano’s occasional complacency as areas of concern. However, he also commended Manu Koné for his effective management of the centre-midfield role following the injury to Aurélien Tchouaméni, suggesting that Koné’s understanding of game management has been a stabilising factor for the national side.
Looking ahead to the semi-final, Warnock predicted a tight contest where Spain’s possession-based approach would be met by French counter-attacking threats. He emphasised the tactical puzzle posed by Spain’s use of Mikel Oyarzabal as a false nine, which could leave French centre-halves uncertain about when to step out. While acknowledging Spain’s effective use of substitutes, Warnock maintained that France’s superior squad depth and tactical cohesion would ultimately provide the edge in a closely matched encounter.
