Warner highlights 49ers defensive line depth ahead of 2026 season
With the 2026 campaign approaching, Fred Warner has outlined the potential of the team's defensive line, citing statistical improvements linked to Mykel Williams' return and praising the consistency of Osa Odighizuwa.

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner has identified a significant shift in the team's defensive capabilities ahead of the 2026 season, describing the defensive line as a "three-headed monster" comprising Alfred Collins, CJ West, and Mykel Williams. Speaking at his youth football camp in San Mateo, Warner emphasised the potential for these players, along with Upton Stout and Osa Odighizuwa, to form a critical component of the roster's depth.
Warner specifically highlighted the impact of Mykel Williams, who is returning from an ACL injury. He noted that Williams' current mindset suggests a strong return to form. Statistical data from the 2025 season underscores the importance of Williams' presence; with him on the field, the 49ers allowed a 42% success rate and a 4.9% explosive run rate. In contrast, when Williams was absent, those figures rose to 52.9% and 11.8% respectively, indicating a marked decline in run defence efficiency.
The linebacker also praised the resilience of Collins and West, noting their ability to hold their ground against double teams during the previous season. Warner described both players as potential building blocks for the middle of the line, suggesting that their performance last year was a bright spot for a unit that historically struggled. He expressed confidence that all three members of this core group would take a "next step" in the upcoming season.
Beyond the primary trio, Warner singled out Upton Stout for his contributions at the nickel position and his character. Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris corroborated Warner's influence on the second-year player, noting that Stout adopts a serious demeanor and mirrors Warner's approach to the game. Warner described Stout as someone he loves to watch and values highly as a person, anticipating significant contributions from him in 2026.
Warner also commended Osa Odighizuwa for his disruptive play on the inside, referring to him as "steady Eddie" and "Mr. Consistent." Having previously played for the Dallas Cowboys, Odighizuwa has been noted for his ability to generate pressure within the interior line. Warner stated that the combination of Odighizuwa's interior disruption and the run-stopping capabilities of the other linemen provides the defence with one of its deepest groups in recent years.
