Walmart is expanding its restaurant-delivery offering through a partnership with Papa John’s, initially making pizzas, sides and desserts available to customers in select US markets via its app and website.

The service is planned to launch this autumn, with Walmart intending to expand it to thousands of participating Papa John’s locations nationwide. The initial markets and rollout date have not been disclosed.

Customers will be able to place restaurant orders separately or combine them with Walmart grocery and household-product deliveries. Walmart’s existing delivery network is expected to handle fulfilment.

The agreement builds on Walmart’s wider investment in fast delivery. Yahoo Finance reported that the retailer’s US e-commerce sales rose 24 per cent in its latest quarter, while fast-delivery services for groceries and general merchandise grew 48 per cent.

Walmart said delivery in 30 minutes or less was available in 38 US markets, and about 80 per cent of e-commerce orders were fulfilled from stores. The partnership broadens Walmart’s restaurant-delivery presence alongside dedicated platforms including DoorDash and Uber Eats, although its impact on sales, order frequency, basket size and profitability remains unproven.
