Vrabel declines to rule out further absence amid Patriots controversy
Mike Vrabel addressed ESPN regarding his availability after missing NFL Draft Day 3 for counseling, refusing to guarantee future presence while emphasising current team commitments.

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has declined to guarantee his future availability, stating he is fully focused on the team during organised team activities following a personal controversy. Vrabel’s comments came after he missed the third day of the NFL Draft to attend counseling, a departure from standard protocol that has drawn public scrutiny and interrupted the team’s first offseason under his leadership.
Speaking to ESPN, Vrabel addressed questions about whether fans should expect another absence similar to the one that occurred during the draft. “I can’t tell you anything other than I’m going to be out there today in full force. So I’m going to focus on today and the excitement that we’ve had and that we’ve built so far,” Vrabel said. The response avoided a firm long-term promise, instead directing attention back to immediate football obligations.
The controversy stems from photos published in April showing Vrabel in social settings with former NFL reporter Dianna Russini. The images sparked public scrutiny regarding Vrabel’s personal life and raised questions about his availability during one of the NFL’s most critical offseason weekends. Vrabel missed the draft session specifically to be with his family and attend counseling, a move that is unusual for a head coach during the draft process.
The Patriots confirmed they were not in contact with Vrabel during the portion of the draft he missed. While the team moved through its picks without him, his absence became a significant subplot, as new coaches rarely step away during the draft. The incident has disrupted the team’s narrative, with Vrabel attempting to reset the tone after what has been described as a loud and controversial draft weekend.
Vrabel’s challenge now is to ensure the outside controversy does not overshadow the team’s focus on roster building and culture. By emphasising his presence at organized team activities, he is signalling a return to standard operations, though the long-term resolution of the situation involving Russini remains undetermined. The Patriots require stability as they move forward, with Vrabel insisting his attention is currently on the work in front of him.
