Vou’s Fijian Flying Circus brings a shared stagecraft to Australia
The multidisciplinary troupe combines aerials, juggling, dance and music with a production model in which performers build, operate and perform the show.
Vou’s Fijian Flying Circus has begun its Australian tour after opening at the Brisbane Festival, bringing a lo-fi, high-energy production shaped as much by collective labour as by spectacle. Its performers move between aerials, juggling, dance, music and physical theatre, while also managing the practical work behind the big top.
The troupe constructs the stage, erects the tent, installs seating and operates technical equipment. Performers also run interval snacks and merchandise stalls, extending their roles from the stage into the show’s broader production and commercial ecosystem.
The company was founded in Suva 19 years ago and launched the circus in 2024. After touring Tahiti, New Caledonia and New Zealand, it is now performing across Australia. The family-friendly production follows a young girl seeking an enchanted shoe from a mischievous spirit, combining traditional circus forms with traditional Fijian costumes and contemporary performance.
Vou’s model is also designed to create pathways into the performing arts. Its two-year diploma covers dance, theatre, circus, singing and drumming. The company’s scholarship programme provides free tuition, board and stipends to between 12 and 14 students annually, with graduates guaranteed paid full-time work with Vou.
As reported by The Guardian, proceeds from ticket, merchandise and food-and-beverage sales after salaries support the scholarships and training programme in Fiji. The Australian season continues in Brisbane until 4 October, Melbourne from 17 October to 22 November, and Sydney from 12 December to 10 January 2027.
