UVA men’s tennis wins 2026 NCAA Championship on another legendary run
Cavaliers defeat three top-five seeds in succession to secure 2026 championship

The Virginia Cavaliers men’s tennis team has secured its seventh NCAA national title, defeating the University of Texas 4-3 in the 2026 championship final held in Athens, Georgia. The victory marks the program’s first national title since winning back-to-back championships in 2022 and 2023, cementing its status as one of the most consistent powers in collegiate tennis.

Virginia’s path to the title was defined by resilience rather than dominance, as the Cavaliers defeated three consecutive top-five seeds in the final three rounds of the tournament. After beating No. 5 Mississippi State in the quarterfinals and No. 1 Wake Forest in the semifinals, Virginia faced No. 2 Texas in the final. The match followed a pattern of early adversity that has characterised much of their tournament run, with Texas taking the doubles point to establish a 1-0 lead.

The Cavaliers fought back to tie the match at 2-2 before Texas reclaimed the lead at 3-2. The turning point came on court three, where No. 114 Jangjun Kim defeated No. 35 Sebastian Eriksson 6-1, 7-6 to level the score at 3-3. This set the stage for No. 1 Dylan Dietrich, who faced Texas’ No. 3 Sebastian Gorzny on court one. Dietrich dropped the first set in a tiebreak but responded with straight 6-4 victories in the next two sets to clinch the championship.

Dietrich’s performance earned him the Tournament MVP award. He finished the NCAA Championship with a 5-0 record and had gone 24-1 on court one during the spring season. His victory moved Virginia into fourth place all-time in NCAA men’s tennis team championships, breaking a tie with Georgia. The win also represents the 37th NCAA team title in Virginia athletics history.

The emotional centerpiece of the run occurred the previous day in the semifinal against Wake Forest. Trailing 3-1 and facing elimination against the defending national champions, Virginia secured three consecutive three-set victories from Stiles Brockett, Kim, and freshman Andres Santamarta Roig to complete one of the greatest comebacks in program history. Roig, who also clinched the quarterfinal win against Mississippi State, highlighted the depth of the lineup that contributed to the title.

Head coach Andres Pedroso described the team’s performance as having a “never say die attitude,” noting that while Virginia did not always start matches strongly, they consistently found the necessary points when the stakes were highest. The Cavaliers have now won NCAA team titles in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2022, 2023, and 2026, reaching the final nine times in the last 15 championships.

The 2026 title underscores Virginia’s institutional strength in college tennis. With Dietrich, Keegan Rice, and Kim all named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team in singles, the program has demonstrated that its success is built on a deep roster rather than reliance on a single player. The victory solidifies Virginia’s position as a defining dynasty in the sport.
