Vikings Look Underrated
National outlets and oddsmakers rank Minnesota 23rd to 28th, citing Kyler Murray as a lateral move, while the team retains defensive strength and key offensive talent.

National media outlets and betting markets have assigned the Minnesota Vikings a low profile for the upcoming NFL season, ranking them between 23rd and 28th in various power lists. This assessment follows the team’s acquisition of quarterback Kyler Murray, with analysts and oddsmakers largely viewing the move as a lateral shift rather than an upgrade. Major publications including The Ringer, ESPN, and NFL.com have expressed scepticism, with The Ringer describing Murray as a player who is unlikely to overcome the talent deficit in the NFC North.

Betting markets reflect this pessimism, with DraftKings listing the Vikings at +500 to win the NFC North. This places them behind the Detroit Lions at +184, the Green Bay Packers at +205, and the Chicago Bears at +320. The Vikings’ over/under win total is set at 8.5, a decrease from the 9.5 recorded during the 2024 offseason. Their playoff odds stand at +150, ranking 20th best, while Super Bowl odds are set at +5000, also ranking 20th best.

The prevailing narrative attributes the low valuation to the perception that Murray is a mid-tier journeyman who is not a good fit for head coach Kevin O’Connell’s offensive system. Analysts suggest Murray, who is expected to start over rookie J.J. McCarthy, is “washed” and will not provide the necessary lift after a previous season where the Vikings suffered the second-worst quarterback passing grade in the league according to PFF.

However, the source material argues this narrative overlooks significant roster improvements. The Vikings finished the previous season 9-8, with a defence that ranked 7th in points allowed and 3rd in yards allowed, despite an offence that led the league in turnovers. Defensive additions include Dallas Turner, James Pierre, Andrew Van Ginkel, and Blake Cashman. Turner is viewed as a viable replacement for Jonathan Greenard, having recorded 42 pressures and nine sacks in his debut season.

Offensive continuity remains a key factor, with the retention of star wide receiver Justin Jefferson and the addition of Jauan Jennings to replace Jalen Nailor. Blake Brandel has also taken over the starting centre role. The team parted ways with defensive tackles Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave, replacing them with rookies Caleb Banks and Domonique Orange, but retains a core that includes Byron Murphy Jr. and Christian Darrisaw, suggesting the external view may undervalue the squad’s current composition.
