Vikings move J.J. McCarthy to third string behind Carson Wentz

Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell has named Carson Wentz as the team’s backup quarterback for its Week 1 matchup with the Green Bay Packers, moving J.J. McCarthy to third string.
Kyler Murray remains listed as Minnesota’s starter, according to the report from Fox Sports. O’Connell said the depth chart behind Murray would be evaluated on a week-to-week basis, leaving McCarthy’s immediate role subject to review.
McCarthy was selected 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft but missed his rookie season after suffering a torn meniscus. The source reports that he made 10 starts last season, completing 57.6 per cent of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
The change places veteran Wentz ahead of McCarthy for the Packers matchup, while preserving the possibility of further changes as the Vikings assess their quarterback options weekly.
