The new device repurposes retail shelf label technology to create a lo-fi digital display that never needs charging.

VidaBay has introduced the Snap, a reusable digital photo magnet designed specifically for refrigerators. The device features a 2.5-inch colour E Ink screen and is powered wirelessly via a smartphone's NFC chip, eliminating the need for batteries or charging. Priced at $29.99, the Snap utilises repurposed retail electronic shelf label technology to display images with a distinct lo-fi aesthetic.

The hardware relies on the Spectra 3100 screen, originally developed for retail electronic shelf labels, which limits colour output to black, white, red, and yellow. Image transfer via NFC takes approximately 25 to 30 seconds due to the time required to refresh the multi-pigment E Ink screen. The mobile app includes features to crop, zoom, rotate, and adjust brightness, contrast, and saturation, with a preview function to simulate how images will appear on the limited-colour screen.

Users must hold the device in close physical proximity to a smartphone for NFC pairing to succeed. Cases thicker than a thin silicone layer, such as leather cases, can prevent successful image transfer. The Snap and the smartphone also need to be held very close for the NFC pairing to work, requiring some trial and error to locate the correct antenna position on different devices.

The device lacks a screen light and has a non-removable plastic cover, which can cause glare and reduce viewing angles in ambient light. Despite these limitations, the lo-fi colour capabilities result in an aesthetic reminiscent of classic Polaroid photos, with blue and green areas appearing desaturated. The app generates a preview of what the image will look like on the Snap's four-colour screen to help users select appropriate photos.

The long-term durability of the repurposed retail screen technology when used for personal photography is not yet established. The effectiveness of the NFC transfer process may vary significantly depending on the specific model and thickness of the user's smartphone case, as noted with the iPhone 16 Pro and OnePlus 12 in testing.
