Justin Verlander has retired after 21 seasons in Major League Baseball, saying a leg problem that began during his first start of the season led him to stop playing. He discussed the decision during his studio debut on MLB on FOX.

Verlander said his arm had held up, but his leg had “given out”. He also recalled being surprised when his daughter ran onto the field after what he described as his final outing.

Across his career, Verlander won two World Series titles, three Cy Young Awards and an American League MVP. He said he was most proud of his workload: 3,802⅔ innings across the regular season and post-season.

He is beginning work as a baseball analyst. The source did not provide further details about the role.
