Valve to halt production of physical Steam gift cards amid persistent fraud
Physical stock is expected to clear from retailers by the end of 2026, marking the end of a tangible gifting era for the platform.

Valve has announced it will cease production of physical Steam gift cards, a move driven by the company’s inability to effectively curb scams despite implementing increasingly stringent security restrictions. The decision marks a significant shift in the distribution model for the gaming platform, ending the availability of tangible cards that have historically served as popular retail gifts.
In an update to its support page, Valve explained that the decision was made after scammers adapted to previous security measures, continuing to impact customers and unsuspecting individuals. The company described the move as a "difficult decision" to end the Steam Gift Card program at retail stores, noting that escalating restrictions had not sufficiently mitigated the risk of fraud associated with the physical product.
The gaming company anticipates that remaining physical stock will be fully depleted from retailers' shelves by the end of 2026. This timeline allows for a gradual phase-out, ensuring that existing inventory is sold off before production officially stops. During this period, the digital gift card services will continue to operate, providing an alternative for users looking to add funds to their accounts.
This shift aligns with broader trends in gift card fraud, which has become a common enough issue for the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to publish a frequently asked questions page regarding the practice. While the FTC’s involvement highlights regulatory awareness of the problem, there is no indication of specific legal action against Valve, which has previously implemented various restrictions to combat these scams.
Valve confirmed that existing physical cards remain redeemable, meaning consumers holding unspent cards can still use them to access the platform. The company emphasized that digital alternatives will remain available for gifting to friends and family, ensuring that the core functionality of the gift card system persists even as the physical option disappears from the market.
