Valve releases CAD files for Steam Controller shell to aid customisation
The move allows users to 3D print accessories for the existing device, though internal components are not included in the release.

Valve has released CAD design files for the exterior shell of its Steam Controller under a Creative Commons licence. The initiative, announced on 5 May 2026, enables users to design and 3D print custom accessories and casings for the device.
The released files cover the device's exterior casing only and do not include internal components. Consequently, users cannot manufacture a fully functional unit from scratch without existing hardware.
This development addresses the current shortage of the gamepad, which has been out of stock for several weeks. The release of the design files serves as a workaround to assist enthusiasts who already possess the controller.
While the Steam Controller is considered a nifty device for those who can secure one, it is not currently essential for most gamers given the uncertainty surrounding other Valve hardware releases.
Valve has not yet provided a release window for the Steam Machine or Steam Frame VR headset, further suggesting that the controller remains a discretionary purchase for the majority of the market.
The move highlights a shift towards community engagement, allowing people to get creative with the casing while official restock dates remain unconfirmed.
