Valve opens lottery-style reservation window for Steam Machine preorders

Valve has initiated a reservation window for the Steam Machine, marking a distinct departure from the paid deposit model previously utilised for the Steam Deck. Operating as a lottery system, the process is designed to ensure fairness and mitigate exploitation by automated scripts. The sign-up period is open from June 22 to June 25, 2026, with entries closing at 10AM PT / 1PM ET on the final day.
Eligibility for the reservation is contingent upon holding a Steam account in good standing and having recorded a purchase on the platform prior to April 27, 2026. Valve intends to enforce a strict limit of one signup per household, utilising payment method data and shipping addresses to identify and eliminate duplicate entries. This approach contrasts with the $5 reservation fee previously implemented for the Steam Deck, prioritising access based on account history rather than financial commitment.
The reservation system covers four distinct shipping regions: North America, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Australia. Customers may sign up for multiple hardware configurations, but the selection process employs a one-time randomisation to assign each participant to only one model. If a user is randomly selected for more than one configuration, the system automatically assigns the highest-end model available from their entries.
Winners of the reservation lottery will be notified via email on June 29, 2026. Successful applicants are granted a 72-hour window to complete their purchase. Those not selected for a reservation spot are placed on a waitlist corresponding to the configuration they were closest to securing. Participants who submit their details after the June 25 deadline are automatically added to the back of the waitlist without entering the randomisation pool.
The structure of the reservation lists is segmented by both hardware option and geographic region, with Valve automatically placing users in the list corresponding to their location. Once the initial notification emails are dispatched on June 29, participants are unable to alter their selected configuration. This mechanism establishes a clear timeline for allocation, with the first wave of confirmation emails marking the transition from the sign-up phase to the purchase completion phase.
