Valkyries’ nine-game winning streak ends in loss to Mystics

The Golden State Valkyries’ franchise-best nine-game winning streak came to an end on July 20 following a 90-82 defeat to the Washington Mystics. The loss halts a dominant period for the squad, which currently holds the third-best record in the WNBA at 19-8.

Despite the defeat, Valkyries guard Kaitlyn Chen delivered a standout performance, scoring a career-high 20 points and recording six assists in 24 minutes of play. Chen, who came off the bench, shot 61 per cent from the field, making eight of 13 attempts, including two three-pointers. She also contributed two rebounds and one steal.

Chen’s efficiency marked a historic moment for the league. She became the first WNBA player this season to record at least 20 points and five assists while coming off the bench. The 24-year-old, a 5-foot-9 guard selected 30th overall in the third round of the 2025 WNBA Draft out of the University of Connecticut, had been averaging 7.3 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 14.3 minutes per game prior to this outing.

The Valkyries’ standing in the league remains strong despite the setback. They sit two games behind the league-leading Minnesota Lynx (21-6) and half a game behind the second-place Las Vegas Aces. Chen’s season shooting averages stand at 57.1 per cent from the field and 40.6 per cent from three-point range.

Golden State has been granted a week off before resuming play. They are scheduled to face the Phoenix Mercury on July 29 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. The match is set to tip off at 7 p.m. PT/10 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on CNBC and USA Network.
