USMNT Player Ratings: Folarin Balogun has arrived; Weston McKennie, Christian Pulisic dominate Paraguay
Expanded format boosts knockout stage prospects as Pulisic and Balogun shine at SoFi Stadium

The United States men’s national team opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The result marks the highest goal tally in a single World Cup match for the USMNT, surpassing previous records and establishing a strong foundation for their group stage campaign. The win represents the first World Cup fixture hosted on US soil since 1994, with the expanded 48-team format significantly easing the path to the knockout stages.

The match began with an early shift in momentum when Paraguay’s Damian Bobadilla bundled a pass from Weston McKennie into his own net in the seventh minute. Folarin Balogun doubled the lead in the 31st minute, capitalising on a deflection from Christian Pulisic’s cross, before curling a third goal just before the half-time interval. The USMNT dominated the first half, controlling 75 per cent of possession and creating numerous chances, including a significant header from Chris Richards.

Balogun’s brace made him only the second US player to score more than once in a single World Cup match. His performance was underpinned by high work rate, recording the second most touches on the team with 96 and maintaining high pass confidence. CBS Sports highlighted Balogun as a key arrival in the squad, noting his smart play and ability to take the game by the throat despite occasional defensive lapses.

Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie were identified as dominant performers by match analysts. Pulisic provided an assist for Balogun’s second goal and was substituted at half-time as a precautionary measure to ensure rest. McKennie’s influence was felt throughout, particularly in the build-up to the opening own goal and in his defensive duties against Paraguay’s attacking threats.

Paraguay pulled one back in the 70th minute through Mauricio, but the USMNT sealed the victory late in the game. Substitute Giovanni Reyna, who replaced Pulisic, scored a 20-yard curling shot with the outside of his boot, described as an impactful contribution. The result places the United States in a strong position to advance, with one additional point likely guaranteeing a spot in the last 32 due to the tournament’s expanded structure.
