US visa denial removes Somali referee from World Cup roster
FIFA confirms it will not challenge the decision, citing host nation authority, as Somalia’s top official returns to a hero’s welcome amid diplomatic friction.

Omar Abdulkadir Artan, a Somali referee selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has been removed from the tournament’s officiating roster after being denied entry into the United States. The decision by US Customs and Border Protection at Miami International Airport on Saturday cited "vetting concerns," effectively ending Artan’s participation in the competition despite his inclusion on FIFA’s final list.
Artan, who was named Africa’s best male referee in 2025, was scheduled to join other World Cup officials at their training base in Miami. However, he was prevented from entering the country and returned to Mogadishu on Wednesday. The incident has drawn formal criticism from the Somali Football Federation, which has publicly rebuked the US government for the visa refusal, while FIFA confirmed it would not challenge the decision, acknowledging that host nations retain final authority over visa admissions.
Upon his arrival at Aden Adde International Airport, Artan was greeted by hundreds of supporters, government officials, and sports dignitaries. Escorted by police to the VIP terminal, he was received by Somalia’s Minister of Youth and Sports and members of the Somalia Football Federation. Artan expressed gratitude to the Somali government and people for their support, vowing to officiate at the next World Cup and urging national pride among Somali youths.
The refusal to admit a FIFA-appointed match official is described as highly unusual, sparking global outrage and prompting questions regarding the US's capacity to host the prestigious event. Somalia is among nearly 40 countries subject to travel restrictions implemented under the Trump administration’s immigration policies. The incident has also drawn support from World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who stated on X that Artan inspired a generation simply by reaching the summit of his profession.
Artan’s career milestones include becoming the first person from Somalia to referee a continental final, the CAF Champions League finals, in 2024. His exclusion from the 2026 World Cup roster, which initially comprised 52 referees, 88 assistant referees, and 30 VAR officials, highlights the complex intersection of international sport and immigration policy. Despite the disappointment, Artan used the moment to emphasize national unity, stating that the Somali flag and passport belong to all citizens, regardless of the country's challenges.
