US shows fight and hunger, but loses final World Cup prep match 2-1 to Germany
Final friendly ends 2-1 loss at Soldier Field as Pochettino’s side prepares for Paraguay opener

The United States men’s national football team concluded its final pre-World Cup preparations with a 2-1 defeat to Germany on Saturday at Chicago’s Soldier Field. The match, attended by a sellout crowd of 63,636 spectators, served as the last outing for the Americans before their Group D opener against Paraguay on 12 June. While the result adds to a mixed build-up that included a 3-2 victory over Senegal, the performance offered significant insights into the squad’s cohesion under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Germany established an early advantage in the 12th minute following a foul by Tyler Adams near the penalty area. Joshua Kimmich delivered a curling indirect free kick that Kai Havertz converted with a header, capitalising on space created by clever screening. The goal coincided with a brief passage of rain, dampening the atmosphere at the historic venue, though the US responded with competent possession retention and determination to regain the ball.

The United States levelled the score in the 23rd minute through Antonee Robinson. The Fulham defender struck a thunderbolt volley from 23 yards out before the ball hit the ground, sending it past German goalkeeper Oliver Baumann. The goal provided a moment of rapture for the home fans, halting Germany’s momentum and leading to a period of chippy fouls and unconverted ambitious passes as both teams adjusted to the cooling conditions.

Germany restored their lead in the 57th minute when Jamal Musiala played a quick through-ball to Leroy Sané. Sané placed a shot to the far post beyond a diving Matt Freese, capitalising on a half-step advantage over trailing defender Tyler Adams. The US struggled to penetrate Germany’s defensive structure, with Christian Pulisic and Sergiño Dest finding limited impact from the wings against a German side eager to close down space.

Goalkeeper Matt Freese started in goal and played the full 90 minutes, a performance that appears to settle the starting keeper debate ahead of the tournament. Pochettino had split duties between Freese, Matt Turner, and Chris Brady in previous warm-ups, but Freese’s consistency suggests he will lead the line against Paraguay. Substitutions at the hour mark weakened the US’s high-pressing cohesion, leading to muddled off-ball movement, though Sebastian Berhalter impressed off the bench with his movement and technical prowess.

Despite the loss, the US seldom appeared to switch off or make compounding mistakes, a sign of progress from earlier friendlies against Belgium and Portugal. The squad remains largely fit, with only one player, Richards, in medical limbo. The team now heads to the World Cup with a sense of readiness, facing Paraguay in their tournament debut less than a week away.
