U.S. Bancorp Earnings Beat Estimates as Stock Lags Nasdaq and Peer PNC
Analysts maintain a Moderate Buy consensus with an $63.07 price target, implying 18.7% upside, despite the stock underperforming the broader market and rival PNC Financial Services Group over the past year.

U.S. Bancorp reported first-quarter 2026 results on April 16 that exceeded Wall Street expectations, yet the Minneapolis-based lender’s shares fell 1.6 per cent following the announcement. The financial services holding company posted revenue of $7.3 billion, a 4.7 per cent increase from the prior year, aligning with analyst estimates. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $1.18, surpassing the consensus forecast.
Despite the positive earnings data, the stock has struggled to keep pace with the broader market. Over the past 52 weeks, U.S. Bancorp rose nearly 19.7 per cent, lagging significantly behind the Nasdaq Composite, which returned 38.4 per cent during the same period. The underperformance has been evident in recent months as well; the stock declined 1.6 per cent over the past three months, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 19.3 per cent.
Technical indicators suggest a shift in short-term momentum. While the stock has traded above its 200-day moving average since last year, signalling long-term bullish trends, it has slipped below its 50-day moving average since this month. The share price also remains 13.2 per cent lower than its 52-week high of $61.19, reached on February 11.
In terms of peer comparison, U.S. Bancorp has trailed its closest rival in the regional banking sector. PNC Financial Services Group shares surged 23.8 per cent over the past 52 weeks, outperforming U.S. Bancorp’s returns. The Minneapolis-based firm, which operates through segments including Wealth, Commercial and Institutional Banking, and Payment Services, holds a market capitalisation of $84.8 billion.
Wall Street analysts remain moderately optimistic about the stock's outlook. Among the 22 analysts covering U.S. Bancorp, the consensus rating is a Moderate Buy. The mean price target stands at $63.07, implying an 18.7 per cent upside potential from current levels.
