Former player succumbs to leukaemia after nine-month illness; tributes pour in from coaching staff and peers

The University of Virginia football program has confirmed the death of former safety Donovan Johnson Sr., who passed away following a nine-month battle with leukaemia. The announcement was made via the university’s official social media accounts on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, shortly after 6 P.M. local time.

Johnson, who played for the Cavaliers in the orange and blue, appeared in 15 games during his collegiate career. He recorded 12 tackles and was noted as one of only 12 true freshmen to appear in a game during his first season with the team.

Tributes were rapidly shared by coaches, teammates, and other members of the Virginia football family. Former wide receivers coach Marques Hagans issued a detailed statement on X, formerly Twitter, describing Johnson as a “bright light” characterised by joy, loyalty, and a dedication to his family.

Hagans highlighted Johnson’s role as a father, noting his fierce desire to be present for his son. The coach shared both a written tribute and a video message, stating that Johnson battled his illness with a “brave and gracious heart” and served as a role model to the current squad.

The broader Virginia football community, including the student-run sports blog Streaking the Lawn, joined in expressing condolences. The university’s official accounts described Johnson as a beloved member of the football family, sending prayers to his relatives during this period of mourning.
