University of Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey arrested on underage drinking and fake ID charges in Arkansas

Drake Lindsey, the starting quarterback for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, was arrested early Friday morning in Fayetteville, Arkansas, following reports from bar staff regarding the use of a fraudulent identification document. The incident occurred at the YeeHawg bar after employees contacted the Fayetteville Police Department concerning a possible fake ID. According to a preliminary police report obtained by ESPN, officers directed their attention to Lindsey, who was subsequently detained at the Washington County Detention Center.

The charges filed against the 20-year-old involve minor possession of alcohol and the attempted use of a fraudulent or altered identification document. During the interaction with law enforcement, Lindsey admitted to possessing a fake ID and confirmed that he had consumed alcohol before arriving at the venue. Police recovered a copy of the fake identification card from his wallet, and he signed a form acknowledging the minor in possession of alcohol and the attempted use of the fraudulent document.

Lindsey was released from the detention facility approximately seven hours after his arrest following the posting of a $470 bond. While the immediate legal proceedings are set for future dates, the incident has prompted a response from the university administration. A spokesperson for the University of Minnesota confirmed awareness of the situation and stated that the athletics department would address the matter internally. Despite the arrest, the spokesperson confirmed that Lindsey is expected to return as the starting quarterback for the 2026 season.

The upcoming court hearings are scheduled for June 1 and June 29 in Fayetteville District Court. These dates will determine the progression of the case against the Fayetteville native, who previously starred at his local high school before joining the Big Ten conference. The university is currently scheduled to open the 2026 season on September 3 against Eastern Illinois, with Lindsey set to lead the team in that matchup.

Lindsey's collegiate tenure has been marked by significant statistical achievements prior to this incident. As a sophomore, he started all 13 games for Minnesota in the 2025 season, helping the team win eight games and setting a school record for victories by a freshman quarterback. His performance included 2,382 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and a 63.2 per cent completion rate, figures that ranked among the better single-season marks in program history.

Before his time in Minneapolis, Lindsey established a strong foundation at Fayetteville High School, where he led the Bulldogs to a 13-0 record and an Arkansas state championship as a senior. His high school accolades included Arkansas Gatorade Player of the Year honours, and he was named the starting quarterback for the 2026 season following his successful freshman campaign which saw him complete 249 of 386 passes with six interceptions.
