United Stars Shape World Cup Qualification Landscape
France and Wales secure top spots in their groups, while England faces a play-off after finishing second to Spain.

Manchester United Women players played pivotal roles in determining World Cup qualification scenarios for their respective national teams on Tuesday night. The results from the UEFA Women’s Nations League fixtures have reshaped the path to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with several United stars contributing to decisive outcomes for their countries.
France secured top spot in their qualification group with a 1-0 victory over Ireland. Melvine Malard was instrumental in the win, scoring a pivotal acrobatic goal just before half-time and providing an assist. The result ensures France advances automatically, positioning them ahead of the Netherlands, who finished second in their group after defeating Poland 3-1.
Wales also secured automatic qualification by winning their group, beating Czechia 3-1. The victory was bolstered by contributions from United’s Mared Griffiths, who scored the third goal to seal the win. Additionally, Middleton-Patel started in goal for the Welsh side, maintaining a clean sheet in the decisive fixture.
In other key fixtures, Sweden salvaged a point in a 2-2 draw with Italy, avoiding a defeat that could have jeopardised their standing. Trailing 2-0 at the 70-minute mark, Sweden found a lifeline when a corner was parried onto the crossbar by a Swedish player, allowing Lundkvist to score. Three minutes later, Sara Rolfo equalised from another corner. Rolfo, who had previously raised concerns regarding her game time for the national side, will hope this performance influences future selection. Anna Sandberg and Julia Zigiotti also started for Sweden.
Norway defeated Austria 2-1 to finish second in their group behind Germany. Both Norwegian players from United started the match, helping their team secure a strong position in the standings. Meanwhile, the Netherlands also finished second in their group, behind France, after their win over Poland.
England’s campaign for automatic qualification ended despite a 3-0 victory over Ukraine. The Lionesses finished as runners-up to world champions Spain, who claimed the top spot based on a superior head-to-head record. Consequently, England must now enter a two-round play-off system. Le Tissier started at right-back for England, while Park entered the match in the 65th minute.
The outcome for England contrasts with the success of their United counterparts in other nations, highlighting the fragmented nature of the qualification process. While France and Wales have secured their places, England’s path now requires navigating the play-off gauntlet to reach the World Cup.
