United squad reshuffle as Tielemans debuts and Rashford returns

Manchester United’s pre-season preparations in Gothenburg saw significant personnel developments as head coach Michael Carrick confirmed the return of Marcus Rashford to the squad. The forward rejoins the club after Barcelona failed to trigger a £26 million option to buy him at the end of the 2025 season. Rashford’s return follows a loan spell at Aston Villa in January 2025, which was precipitated by a breakdown in relations with former manager Ruben Amorim.

Carrick, a former teammate and manager of Rashford, indicated his role in facilitating the player’s reintegration. The coach noted that while the full squad is now assembled for the upcoming training camp in Maynooth, Ireland, Rashford might not feature immediately. Carrick suggested that Wednesday could be too soon for the 28-year-old to make his first appearance since December 2024, prioritising a gradual return to match fitness.

In other squad news, midfielder Mason Mount was substituted after 20 minutes against Paris St-Germain following a precautionary measure for a foot injury. Carrick described the incident as a response to a hefty blow, though Mount was observed walking freely past reporters post-match. The substitution provided an opportunity for Youri Tielemans to make his debut in the 1-1 draw.

Tielemans, a £35 million signing from Aston Villa on a five-year deal running until June 2031, played a 26-minute cameo. His performance drew appreciation from senior club figures, particularly for his passing combinations with Bruno Fernandes. Director of football Jason Wilcox had previously praised the Belgian midfielder for adding composure and creativity, noting his consistent standing in the Premier League over the past seven years.

The squad now prepares for a week-long training camp at the Carton House hotel in Maynooth. Matheus Cunha, who has been assigned Rashford’s number 10 shirt, is also expected to join the trip after a minor injury ruled him out of the Gothenburg encounter. United’s pre-season programme continues with a friendly against Leeds United at Croke Park on 12 August, followed by a match against AC Milan in Wroclaw on 15 August.
