Undead Labs Unveils State of Decay 3 Gameplay Ahead of 2027 Launch
Alpha playtests set for May as studio confirms cross-platform release for Xbox, Steam, and PlayStation 5

Undead Labs has released the first substantial gameplay footage for State of Decay 3 during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026. The trailer provides the first detailed look at the title’s mechanics since the project was initially announced six years ago, confirming that development is progressing toward its scheduled release window in 2027.
The upcoming title will be available across multiple platforms, including Xbox, Steam, and PlayStation 5. According to the developer, the game supports both solo play and shared-world co-op for up to four players. The premise centres on community management within a harsh zombie apocalypse, where players must build settlements and keep survivors alive against a threat driven by the blood plague.
Franchise co-creator Brant Fitzgerald confirmed that Undead Labs will launch alpha playtests in May. A waitlist is now open for players wishing to participate in these early testing phases. While the trailer offered a glimpse into the game’s systems, it did not provide a specific day or month for the final commercial release, only indicating a 2027 launch.
The announcement occurred alongside other major industry updates during the showcase. Microsoft also confirmed a firm release date of 23 February 2027 for Fable, the new role-playing game developed by Playground Games, the studio behind the Forza Horizon series. This marks the end of a prolonged development cycle for Fable, which has faced multiple delays in recent years.
State of Decay 3 represents a significant milestone for Undead Labs, bridging the gap between its initial announcement and its eventual market entry. As the studio moves into the alpha testing phase, attention will turn to how the shared-world mechanics and settlement management systems perform under live conditions before the 2027 release.
