Gearbox Software co-founder Randy Pitchford reports friend found device while scuba diving near St. Martin

Randy Pitchford, co-founder of Gearbox Software, has reported the discovery of an unannounced Google Pixel Watch 5 in the Caribbean Sea. The device was found by a friend of Pitchford’s while scuba diving near the island of St. Martin. According to Pitchford, the watch was in decent condition despite being submerged, with a drained battery that still allowed the display to show the time.

Pitchford shared images of the device on the social media platform X, revealing markings on the reverse side that read "Google" and "Pixel Watch 5." The back of the unit also lists a heart-rate sensor and an ultra-wideband chip. The design appears to mirror the bubble-style aesthetic of the current Pixel Watch 4, suggesting it is a direct successor rather than a conceptual model.

The incident marks a departure from typical product leaks, which usually originate from supply chain insiders or data mining activities. Pitchford noted that his friend, believing Pitchford to have connections in the technology sector, asked for assistance in locating the original owner. Pitchford stated he has since arranged for the watch to be returned, though the identity of the person who lost it remains unknown.

It remains unclear whether the device is a genuine Google prototype or a counterfeit item. Kotaku has suggested that it is unlikely Google would involve Pitchford in a marketing campaign to leak the device, given the unusual nature of the discovery. If the story is genuine, it represents one of the most bizarre product leaks in recent memory, echoing the accidental loss of an iPhone 4 prototype by an Apple employee several years ago.

Google is expected to officially announce the Pixel Watch 5 at its annual Pixel event, scheduled for August or September 2026. Until then, the true nature of the device found in the Caribbean will remain a subject of speculation among industry observers.
