UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall has returned to the gym following a recent medical scan that indicated positive progress in his ocular recovery. The reigning titleholder was sidelined since October after his defence against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 was cut short due to eye pokes, necessitating multiple surgeries earlier this year to repair the damage.
Speaking in a video release, Aspinall confirmed that he is currently training without engaging in sparring. He described the latest imaging as showing things progressing nicely, expressing optimism that he will be cleared for contact soon if the trajectory remains favourable. However, he emphasised that no specific timeline for his return to competition has been announced.
The promotion has moved to fill the interim vacuum left by Aspinall's absence by booking a heavyweight title fight between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane at the White House. This bout is set to determine the next challenger for the champion once Aspinall is medically cleared to resume fighting.
In related heavyweight action, the UFC has also scheduled a bout between Alexander Volkov and Waldo Cortes-Acosta for UFC 328. These announcements underscore the continued activity within the division while the champion focuses on rehabilitation.
Aspinall stated his willingness to face any deserving challenger upon his return, noting that he is happy to fight all of them.
