UFC 328: Strickland retains middleweight crown as Chimaev signals divisional shift

Sean Strickland successfully defended his UFC middleweight title against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 328, held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The outcome was a split decision victory for Strickland, who entered the bout as a significant underdog against the defending champion.
The tenor of the championship contest shifted decisively in the second round when Strickland neutralised Chimaev's wrestling dominance. By reversing a series of takedowns, the American fighter prevented the Chechen contender from establishing control on the mat. This tactical adjustment allowed Strickland to outpoint Chimaev over the remaining five rounds, despite the latter appearing significantly laboured after the opening frame.
In the co-feature, Joshua Van retained his flyweight title against Tatsuro Taira. The 24-year-old from Myanmar secured the victory with a three-punch combination in the third round. Taira, who was seeking to become the first Japanese-born UFC champion, displayed what the event coverage described as unhealthy resilience despite sustaining heavy damage and a bloody face.
Following the conclusion of the main event, Khamzat Chimaev addressed UFC CEO Dana White inside the Octagon. Chimaev stated his immediate intention to move up to the light heavyweight division. This decision marks a strategic pivot for the fighter, who had previously maintained an undefeated record since the Fight Island era began.
The event was characterised by heightened security measures surrounding the cage, necessitated by the intense pre-fight rhetoric exchanged between Strickland and Chimaev. Despite the vitriol, including threats and insults regarding nationality and religion, the fighters touched gloves before the bout. Chimaev was subsequently captured on an in-cage microphone telling Strickland, "I love you, man," moments after the introduction.

Additionally, former Bellator champion Amosov secured his second straight dominant submission win in the UFC by tapping out Joel Alvarez via an arm-triangle choke in the second round.
